American Institute of Architects

The American Institute of Architects is a professional organization that is headquartered in Washington, D.C. The AIA offers programs such as education, government lobbying, redeveloping communities, and public outreach to support architects as a profession. This organization was started in 1857 by a group of 13 architects, who invited 16 other well-known architects to join them. Today there are 200 employees, and 300 chapters of this organization available to architects. The AIA is an advocate, a community, and an information resource. The AIA sponsors architecture studies so that architects can continue their education. The AIA also has a compilation of contract documents with more than 100 forms architects use.

The AIA also provides web-based resources for emerging architecture professionals, also conducting market research and analysis of the economic factors, which affect the business of architecture. AIA leadership such as Carl Elefante, works on sustainability projects. Carl brings experience such as working on the renovation of Philadelphia’s Ben Franklin Museum, as well as Ames Hall at George Washington University. Robert Ivy is Chief Executive officer of the AIA, running a progressive organization. The AIA promotes high quality design. Robert Ivy is promoting the AIA by heightening public awareness of the value of architecture as a field.

Robert Ivy was the Editor in Chief of the Architectural Record, an architecture journal, with McGraw-Hill Companies from October 1996 to February 2011. He then became Vice-President/Editorial Director of McGraw-Hill from October 1996 to February 2011. Up until now, he is EVP, Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects. The American Institute of Architects has 87,890 members, which Robert Ivy now leads. Ivy’s main idea is to encourage architects to think beyond their field. The Monthly Architecture Billings Index is a survey that architects watch to analyze the performance and projections of the U.S. building industry, which some believe to be an accurate predictor of economic success in the United States.

Ivy has stated that architecture does affect the likelihood of non-communicable diseases rates. In modern times, he feels that buildings and cities are designed to promote exercise through stairs, and an ability to walk around. Design professionals have to keep human wellbeing in mind when they design architecture. Architects also need to think about how to function well with their team. In the future, more proof is needed that a building makes an impact since certain types of places make people more or less productive given the design and how it makes people feel.
